AVIRT Instructor Development Course

AVIRT Instructor Development Course (IDC) Classes

The AVIRT Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the one day class that authorizes you to teach Active Violence Immediate Response Training, HSI's active shooter response and emergency bleeding control program. It is built for the trainer who will stand in front of a staff meeting or a church group and teach people what to do in the first minutes of a violent incident.

AVIRT blends two subjects that are usually taught apart: how to recognize warning signs and decide whether to escape, evade or defend, and how to control life threatening bleeding with tourniquets and wound packing. Teaching it well means running scenario practice safely, correcting technique under pressure, and staging realistic drills with training equipment rather than live gear. That is what the IDC classroom day is for.

The class is a blended course. The course material is developed online, then you spend a day in a classroom practicing instruction, scenario setup, safety briefings and skills evaluation with an instructor coaching you. Course days run all over the country, including weekends, and new dates are added through the year.

Completing the IDC authorizes you to teach AVIRT within your own organization or to your customers, and the fee includes the AVIRT Instructor Training Kit: training tourniquets, wound simulators with gauze, distraction objects, orange rifle and handgun replicas, a TAC+PAC bleeding control kit and a carry case. HSI is not the only option for workplace violence training, but its AVIRT program is one of the few with a national instructor course and a schedule you can search by state.

Classes on this page are listed by the providers that run them, each with its date, city and state. Where a provider publishes a contact form for the class, the form opens already tagged with that course, date and location. Registration, the instructor kit and your authorization all come from the provider.

FAQ

AVIRT Instructor Development Course questions, answered

The questions students ask before booking this course. The provider you book with is the last word on their own agency's rules.

  • What is the AVIRT Instructor Development Course?

It is HSI's one day course that authorizes you to teach AVIRT, the Active Violence Immediate Response Training program. It combines active shooter response, escape and evade decisions, and emergency bleeding control, and it prepares you to run that class for your own organization or for clients.

  • How do I become an AVIRT instructor?

Complete the online portion of the blended course, attend the one day in-person IDC, and pass the teaching and skills evaluation. You then teach under the authorization the course grants, and your kit arrives with the course fee.

  • What does the AVIRT Instructor Development Course cost?

HSI lists the AVIRT IDC at $495 per participant, and that covers the blended training plus the AVIRT Instructor Training Kit, which includes training tourniquets, wound simulators, replicas, a TAC+PAC bleeding control kit and a carry case. Ask the provider about group and private class discounts.

  • Do I need a medical or teaching background to become an AVIRT instructor?

No. The course is open to anyone responsible for safety, including corporate trainers, safety officers, healthcare staff, security personnel, first responders and educators. No prior medical or law enforcement experience is required.

  • How long does the AVIRT instructor authorization last?

Two years, matching the AVIRT student certification you will issue. Renew through your provider before it lapses so you can keep teaching without a gap.

  • Can an organization host a private AVIRT instructor class?

Yes. Organizations certifying several staff can ask the provider about a private IDC on their own site, which usually reduces the per person cost and lets the whole team train together.
